Hence the term soap box became THE expression to describe the process of shouting out to the world whatever it was that one wished to share.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Ever since I was a very little boy, as early as 2 years old, I was into reading magazines about cars. Of course I don't think I could read at that time yet but I would browse through them looking at the photos. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It helped that I grew up surrounded by car enthusiasts and for as long as I can remember, and even to this day, I would hang out in the garage and sit inside a car. When I was a little boy I would sit only in the drivers seat of a stationary car and pretend to drive, complete with a radio for my driving pleasure. I was notorious for running down car batteries then but being the first male child and grandchild has its perks, one of which was the adults would just let me indulge my fantasies.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
However, when I was grown up, though I owned and drove my own cars, I still did the same thing, down to the radio, But this time I would start the engine so I could turn on the radio AND the AC. I didn't stop there though because I would also transfer to the different seats, marveling at the comfort or cursing the discomfort of each position in the car, even down to the third row of the vehicle. Probably a bit excessive but it's good, clean fun ;-)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
With all that, its safe to say that I really do love cars, even though I am far from being affluent, I have kept my interest in them through the years. However, said financial conditions have limited my garage to either donations, resurrections and absolute bargains. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So here on my soapbox I would like to share all things automotive that I have on my mind and wish to share at the moment. That would include reviews, new releases that I am excited about, tools and other products. I will also rant and rave about motoring related laws, behavior, etc. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For now I will kick things off with one or more of several feature columns that will focus on one car in particular. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
These include:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. Cars from my childhood</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2. Cars I have driven, owned, taken for a joyride, etc.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3. Underrated cars and cars that history forgot</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
4. Cars I currently own</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
5. Cars on my vision board - feet on the ground edition<br />
<br />
6. Cars on my vision board - reaching for the stars edition</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For the old cars, my feature would be a mix of what I remember about the car, and how history remembers them.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The feature on the newer cars would include my subjective evaluation about the car, and evaluations from respected sources that I follow either in print or on the web.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So please explore the blog and if you find it entertaining or interesting, please click follow so you can be notified of updates which I aim to keep on a regular basis. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Thanks for visiting!</div>

<p class="MsoNormal">I first encountered the Rimac Nevera in Forza Horizon 4 and
5. Since that time I was so intrigued by the car and the heady (virtual) driving
experience it provided. In both FH4 and FH5, the car, at least on tarmac, had no equal. </p><p class="MsoNormal">This led me
to research all I could about Rimac and the Nevera, deliveries of which have started
to a handful of very lucky buyers. Understandably, many car enthusiasts are
unaware of this car because of its limited run and Rimac is not exactly the most
popular brand around. </p><p class="MsoNormal">This however is bound to change very soon due to a couple
of factors. One is that companies such as Hyundai and Kia are collaborating
with Rimac for their electric vehicles. Another is the joint venture cum merger
of Rimac and Bugatti (yes that supercar) which has proven successful way beyond
both companies expectations. </p><p class="MsoNormal">So given the promising future ahead for Rimac,
let’s take closer look at the current flagship and see where the rubber meets the proverbial road. <o:p></o:p></p><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji60kHOqB1DeW-Wot1NTjz05xoohzVLuw839B5T8ns-Hzk3eA49bKzfAxuFVtxG71Gbes7UKD4BTfk4MvSNIpBjFwU77hg_jpc5t_8gjQbBAn_41Ur61OGJhwKdmn24uTMFMRc28Vd8sPFcIFFtV2DwhjYG5k31xZgpOupqVVDkja27TB9kwEJvf-Mvn4Z/s9499/RIMAC%20NEVERA%20DYNAMIC_9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="6336" data-original-width="9499" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji60kHOqB1DeW-Wot1NTjz05xoohzVLuw839B5T8ns-Hzk3eA49bKzfAxuFVtxG71Gbes7UKD4BTfk4MvSNIpBjFwU77hg_jpc5t_8gjQbBAn_41Ur61OGJhwKdmn24uTMFMRc28Vd8sPFcIFFtV2DwhjYG5k31xZgpOupqVVDkja27TB9kwEJvf-Mvn4Z/w640-h426/RIMAC%20NEVERA%20DYNAMIC_9.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;">The 2024 Rimac Nevera represents a groundbreaking shift in

<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Overview<o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I first got a look at the EV6 by way of this excellent video
by ex-rally driver YS Khong on his YouTube channel. <o:p></o:p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/GSKYiGteiGY" width="320" youtube-src-id="GSKYiGteiGY"></iframe></div><br /><p class="MsoNormal">Khong certainly put the car through its paces but what is
fascinating about it, is the ease with which the EV6 goes through the course.

A treasure trove of this exists on Youtube and I am not ashamed that I have spent hours playing videos on Youtube because they show great recommended videos that are similar to what you are watching so its an endless stream of car porn.</p><p>The problem is that sometimes, you have no time to watch or you simply want to save this great video since sometimes, videos have a nasty way of suddenly disappearing from Youtube.</p><p>For the longest time now I have been using this program <a href="https://www.4kdownload.com/products/videodownloader/19?r=free_license" target="_blank">4K Video Downloader </a> to download my videos. I admit, I am a video download junkie for not only auto videos but the whole spectrum from music videos, concerts, documentaries, educational stuff and the list goes on endlessly. So on a typical video downloading binge I can easily hit the daily download limit so this offer is manna from Heaven.</p><p>But don't take my word for it, its free to download and use with no fuss whatsoever. Small download, virus free</p><p><a href="https://www.4kdownload.com/products/videodownloader/19?r=free_license" target="_blank">4K Video Downloader</a></p><p><br /></p>Motoring Scribehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15869633520162234032noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3676877013434161562.post-20518415736328255052018-05-03T02:38:00.001+08:002018-05-03T02:38:12.126+08:00Ferrari 812 Superfast - Official Video<br /><br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
I am currently in the process of picking a 7 seater automobile for road trips. From the getgo, my heart was set on two cars, the Volvo XC90 and the Chevrolet Suburban.<br />
<br />
So while I have been going back and forth on the model and engine for the XC90 mainly because there were more options, for the Chevy it was simply a question of what year I could afford. Of course I would have wanted the next to the current model but my the prospect of buying two for the price of one appealed to me.<br />
<br />
The bottom line though was that as far as I was concerned, the safety of both cars was a given. The XC90 by reputation and the Chevy by sheer size.<br />
<br />
It was quite a shock when I found out today that I was dead wrong about the Chevy. It seems that in a report by the well respected IIHS or Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Chevy was a deadlier car to be in compared to a Mini Cooper!<br />
<br />
I know right? Who would have thought that such a behemoth could be a a softie in collisions. But how can one argue with statistics?<br />
<br />
So I went over <a href="http://www.iihs.org/iihs/sr/statusreport/article/50/1/1" target="_blank">the study </a>and sure enough, the Chevy Suburban was in the middle of the pack. The XC90 truly shined there while the Ford Expedition was a surprising addition to the safest cars list. There are a lot of surprises there too which can be quite sobering, as it was for me. <br />
<br />
Needless to say, I am rethinking my choices but thought I'd share these revelations in the meantime in the hope that it can enable those who read it to make safer vehicle choices. <br />

Just saw this awesome photo of the Skylines from 1957 to 2007 which includes the R35.<br />
<br />
Turns out, you can download, ABSOULUTELY FREE, a high resolution PDF version that can be printed and framed.<br />
<br />
You just have to visit Cockram Nissan and sign up for their email list (you can opt out anytime) and they will send the links to the Skyline History as well as a Navarra History PDF.<br />
<br />
Personally I am staying on their mailing list because from their site and Pinterest account, they are clearly true blue enthusiasts.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">The new Volvo XC40 is gaining quite a bit of attention in the motoring world. Many industry analysts feel that the XC40 just might be what the doctor ordered to fast track the growth of the compact SUV </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the Philippines, if the Volvo could be imported at its US price point where the fully loaded XC40 is just about 200,000 PESOS more expensive than the fully loaded Honda CRV, it would definitely make waves in the market.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
However, Volvo Philippines might opt to keep the image of the brand as a premium marque and price it a bit higher which would be a shame. Because as the specs below show, the Volvo would clearly perform quite well in the market at the US price point.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Here are the relevant specifications comparing the Volvo XC40 to the Honda CRV. All data taken from their respective corporate website.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
This video along with several more from the Toyota YouTube channel, show that Toyota has totally reinvented the Camry. This is most certainly not your Dad's Camry. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This Camry comes with either a 2.5 liter engine with 203 hp or a 3.5 liter 6 cylinder with 301 hp engine. If this makes it to the Philippines in a relatively unadulterated form, its going to shake up the executive saloon market and go toe to toe with the local Euro sports sedans. <div>

<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/QT8LNx6_L4M/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QT8LNx6_L4M?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
The 2018 CR-V was launched in the Philippines recently. This version was quite special because it marks the first time that the diesel version appears in the country.<br />
<br />
This however, was not the first time that a diesel engine was put in the CR-V. The second generation CR-V was the very first one that had a turbo diesel engine, so it took quite a while for the Honda brass to decide to bring this type of powerplant to our shores.<br />
<br />
I drive a 1st generation CR-V, the ubiquitous RD1 which is my car of choice in the Metro. But whenever it was time to gas up, I find myself thinking about how much more practical this car would be if it had a diesel powerplant. In fact, I was looking at the availability of the diesel engine in the surplus market but I had not found one yet.<br />
<br />
So I looked forward to the new CR-V diesel with much anticipation but when it was finally announced, I had mixed feelings.<br />
<br />
Prior to hearing about the impending arrival of the diesel CR-V, I was looking at the Ford Everest and the Mitsubishi Montero Sport as possible practical urban daily drivers. So having seen what these cars had, the CR-V was a bit of a let down but to be fair, I haven't been able to do a more comprehensive comparison.<br />
<br />
Furthermore, with SRPs ranging from P1.5 M to P2.1M, my initial reaction is that it is overpriced compared to some other diesel SUVs in the market.<br />
<br />
So I'll leave it here for now while I compile some data and make a comparison between the CR-V and other SUVs in its price range.<br />

</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Since we lived in Cubao that time, our route was to bring my
sisters to Holy Spirit School in Lantana then on to Ateneo. I entered Ateneo in
1969 and road conditions then were totally different. Because our house was on
E. Rodriguez (which was Espana Extension then), we could either take Aurora
Boulevard all the way to Katipunan or New York then Ermin Garcia then onto
Aurora. I believe we already came out in Ortanez then since the other corner,
the one with Carag lumber, was already one way. Not sure though. Traffic was unheard
of then and even without airconditioning, it was a comfy ride to and from school.
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I also distinctly remember there were two ways we would get
our bags in the car. We either put them in the front trunk, or in the luggage
space behind the rear seats. Since our bags had wheels, the upholstery there was
marked by the passage of the wheels. Seeing these marks in later years brings
back strong feelings of nostalgia.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Our VW was originally blue and it had two tone, gray
upholstery. Sometime later, my Dad would paint it steel gray and reupholster it
in red vinyl. I also remember that the heaters used to work pretty well while
the exhaust was stock. Mechanically, nothing was changed until the mid 80s.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So for more than two decades, the car was powered by the
original 40 hp single port, single carb engine that was completely stock, both
inside and outside except for the battery which was converted from 6 volts to
12 volts due to some battery issues. All in all, it was a pretty reliable
workhorse that </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
I also remember a couple of occasions where the car was
flooded since my Mom was a kind of daredevil who was not intimidated at all by
flood waters. I know there was one hilarious occasion where the car was
floating, a tribute to its floor pan integrity. Then there was also a time,
after the heater ducts were disabled, where water entered the car and we had to
put our feet up.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
With my Mom behind the wheel, that car just went ahead and
tackled terrain that left other cars in the dust. You see my Mom is quite a sporty
driver and drove quite briskly. It was never dangerous and it was more of an
entertaining ride. This was why in later years, when she asked my why I drove
so fast, I would remind of all her escapades and that was the end of the
discussion.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
One especially fun experience which happened repeatedly for
a few years was when she discovered the CP Garcia shortcut to Ateneo. I am not
sure why we passed there but maybe it was because it would be the shortest way
to my grandmothers house. OR she just loved the rally style driving she could
do there. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
You see, for a long time, CP Garcia was a dirt road from Katipunan,
until the entrance to the housing. In fact, if I remember correctly, even from
there, it was still a gravel road until the University main road. I can still
remember of the tires furiously churning through those stones. But when the road
turned to dirt, Mom would promptly go into rally driver mode, sliding the car
through the dirt. It was really like a rally stage with tall grass left and right.
While it was fun when it was dry, it was downright exhilirating when the rainy
season came where the rear of the car would be sliding left and right with Mom
furiously counter steering through it. She was really a good driver and a lot
of my driving today, I attribute to her because I was always her copilot in
that car. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
To this day, I occassionally dream of that road because it was quite
unforgettable. That little VW just took the terrain in stride and it handled
pretty well considering that VWs were notorious for oversteering. In fact, we
passed there later, with the same road conditions, in my uncles 1974 Corolla SL
and I don’t remember it being as much fun as the VW. Maybe it was because it
had aircon and a radio which the Beetle never had, so Mom was more relaxed in
driving. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
That car would continue to serve as our school transport
when a driver took us to school when Mom started working. And all throughout
those times, rain or shine, that car reliably brought us to school and back
safely. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I miss this car and I am still hoping to locate it and
restore it, no matter what the condition. Just in case, a reader might have
seen it, the plate number was NTX-946. It would probably be junked now but with
all those precious memories, I would really love to be able to bring that car
back home. <o:p></o:p></div>

A couple of days ago, Rolls Royce launched the new Phantom and here's the video of the launch. I don't know about you, but this one's already parked in my dream garage.</div>

A tragic and alarming outcome<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The video below from ABS CBN news shows the tragic result of a collision between a jeepney and a Toyota Wigo.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Both occupants of the Wigo died while those in the jeepney survived.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This result led me to wonder why a newer car with safety equipment to boot, would result in such fatalities. Clearly the crumple zones of newer cars would appear to sustain more damage in order to absorb energy that would otherwise be transferred to the occupants. But why did it kill those in the car?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I suddenly remembered a video from NCAP which does crash testing for auto manufacturers worldwide and they tested two identical cars, manufactured in two different plants. In one car, the occupants would have survived while in the other one, both sustained life threatening injuries. The only difference was the country of manufacture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Could it be a factor in this crash?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I know the Wigo has been crash tested with relatively decent results. Perhaps crash testing the Wigo's being sold in the Philippines should be done as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After, a life should be worth the same regardless of nationality. </div>

Decided to do a little surfing of my own and thought I'd share it here too.<br />

I was surfing around checking for the value of the Ferrari 308 that was launched in Paris when I came across this site.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.birdman308.com/tutorial/308_buyers_guide.htm" target="_blank">Ferrari 308 Buyers Guide</a><br />
<br />
It's by no means exhaustive, but its got a lot of useful information to gearheads.<br />
<br />
In the meantime I still haven't found the value of the blue green 308 in Paris ;-)<br />

<br />
Though I finished the post about the Ferrari 812 Superfast less than an hour ago, I just had to share this video commemorating 70 years of Ferrari cars.<br />
<br />
It's simple, to the point but awesome.<br />

Just in time for the 70th year of Ferrari, the
successor to the F12 Berlinetta has arrived in the form of the 812 Superfast. Its an evolution of the F12 design which was already beautiful to begin with.<o:p></o:p></div>

The 812 builds on that, modifying the lines of the F12 so that the 812 comes out as decidedly aggressive. I suppose if you owned the F12, you'd keep it to use as a sort of "Gentleman's Express" while the 812 Superfast is what you'd use to sow chaos on the road. With nearly 800 hp (789) on tap, this Ferrari lives up to

<br /></div>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/-QfRAwg3gkM/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-QfRAwg3gkM?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The old Panamera was the butt of many a joke in the old Top Gear show featuring Jeremy Clarkson and company. Somehow, none of the hosts had a kind word to say styling wise about it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Personally. while I didn't find the car scintillating, it certainly didn't strike me as ugly. In fact, seeing the car in the flesh actually invokes a positive emotional response to its "sedan with Porsche power" looks that cannot be described but is something car enthusiasts know. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But the new Panamera shown in these videos is a different story altogether. It is, to me, a very attractive large sports sedan. Its not a "shooting brake" type of car, its more like a true long wheelbase 911. Very well executed considering that its not a massive departure from the old. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Perhaps Jeremy might find this one to be a vindication of sorts for the Porsche Panamera. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/5WicTA0x6jE/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5WicTA0x6jE?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I initially thought that the Panamera would boot a mainstay off my vision board but after poring over the Porsche site, I realized that I don't have a "shooting brake" model in there yet. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So here is the new Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo which seems to be a suitable shooting brake so the faster version, Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo is officially a part of my vision board now.</div>

This came about because the quoted range for the Civic R is

So clearly, if I were a prospective car buyer and I had 2.8M
burning in my pocket, I would take a look around to see what else I could get
for that sort of money. Actually there are several other interesting cars like
a BMW 630i Convertible or a Porsche 996 but to keep things organized, lets
focus on American muscle first.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I grew up in an era where American cars were king and the
European cars were just becoming popular. At this time, Camaro and Mustang were
a whole lot of GO but not much when the road starts winding. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

All that has changed today. <o:p></o:p></div>

In fact, the Camaro is giving the Nissan Skyline R35 a run
for its money on the TRACK! I myself was shocked when I watched the video.
Sure, it’s the Z/28 but the Skyline was a Track Edition. </div>

Here’s the video:<o:p></o:p></div>

<o:p><br /></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p><br /></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
What I am trying to say, is that American muscle has come a
long way and if the Camaro can give Godzilla a run for its money, then imagine
what it would do to the Type R Civic. In the handling department, maybe the
Mustang may be the better match for the Civic. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When<a href="http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/reviews/a27655/2016-chevrolet-camaro-ss-vs-2016-ford-mustang-gt/" target="_blank"> Road and Track tested the2016 Camaro SS and Mustang GT,</a> the SS dominated the GT in the handling test.
That’s not to say that the Civic or Mustang handle badly. They handle well, but
the Camaro Z/28 and the GTR track edition are on a different level. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So let’s look at the specs:<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p><br /></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Clearly the Civic is bringing up the rear here as well.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Lastly, there is collector value. Camaros and Mustangs are always
become classics in time. They are cult cars and will remain to be such in the
futures. These new models are destined to become even more collectible because
they herald the time when Camaro and Mustangs could finally go head to head
with supercars on the track.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This is not to bash Honda. After all, the Civic Type R is a
formidable car which will surely result in huge sales given the number of Honda
afficionados out there. In its own way, the Honda will probably be a cult car
too since the red R logo has a way of igniting passion in the hearts of enthusiasts.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Like many of the future articles here, this is a thought
exercise. A daydream put to pen and paper, or in this case, keyboard and blog.
In a perfect world where I had unlimited money, I would buy all three of these
cars. Sure there is some overlap, but each of these cars have a certain
character that sets them apart from each other.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In a semi perfect world where I would have 2.8M to spend on
a sportscar, then I would buy the Camaro SS. It’s a subjective choice which
goes beyond specs. It’s a mix of what I expect from a car and how the car as a
whole, appeals to me. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Sure, it’s a brand new Civic against pre-owned American
muscle but as I have learned, time and again, the second hand car market has
much to offer if one would expand their buying horizons.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
First, I do like Hondas. I own a CRV which I love and will

SiR first came out. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The Subaru has long been
on my want list and was one of my favorite cars in Gran Turismo. The Volkswagen
Golf has been around for a much longer time and I always found it intriguing
because it was always highly rated. Then it was also one of my best cars for
its class in Gran Turismo which only added to my curiosity. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The Focus is the
one that I know the least about but it was on my want list before when the
diesel came out. When I started seeing several versions puffing clouds of black
smoke on the road, it was promptly taken off the list. Then I watched Top Gear test
the Focus, and I watched it in WRC so it went back on my list.<o:p></o:p><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">

So based on all the above, clearly the cars are in a sort of
range where there are no clear runaway winners EXCEPT for horsepower where the
Focus clearly dominates the field. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Without much ado, let me say that the Focus would be my
choice in this segment, but not just because it has the most power. OK, ok that
has a lot to do about it, but its that combined with a racing heritage and the
AWD setup. With this much power on tap I will demand four wheel drive.
Personally, I find this a grave omission in the Honda given its price. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Then there is the styling. The Civic looks so aggressive,
albeit a little too much for my taste. On the other hand, the Golf is perhaps
the most subtle. The Focus and Impreza fall in the middle, though the Focus
is more restrained and for me, it’s the best of both worlds. It has a look that
hints of extreme power, a hint that is validated in reality. Personally, I love
the concept of Q-ships, cars that look plain but are actually fire breathing
behemoths. This is also why I favor turbocharged vehicles, for their relative
lack of noise. <o:p></o:p></div>

The problem though is that we probably won’t be having the
RS version of the Focus here so if I had the 2.8M in my pocket I would probably
opt for a second hand (5 year old) Volvo S60 T6 with all wheel drive and 310
horsepower. It would cost about 2M and I can spend the 800K on Polestar items
and bring the horsepower up to about 362. Sure it won’t be a hatchback but it’s
a sports sedan on steroids that can run with all of these hot hatchbacks.<o:p></o:p><br />

One last note though is that if the Civic will be brought
here, it would be competing head on with 2 year old Mustangs and Camaros. That’s
a pretty tall order and one which I will cover next time. <o:p></o:p></div>

I've always admired Volvo vehicles because of their reputation for safety and their design. Admittedly, I am really partial to European cars and my garage is 80% European.</div>

I have 4 Volvos on my vision board and I will share them on this blog in due time. At the moment though, I just want to share this video which is sure to make the Volvophile's heart beat a little faster.</div>

<br /></div>
<div>
I remember so vividly sitting in this car that I can almost smell the interior again. And the photos of the inside are likewise so clear in my mind.</div>
<br />
I had one of my first car related misadventure here, an incident which I found both alarming and hilarious at the same time.<br />
<br />
The 180D "Ponton" had a pull type handbrake under the dashboard, in the area of the steering column. It also had a 4 speed column shifter.<br />
<br />
This car was usually parked in the sort of secondary covered garage just off our driveway. In our family house then, the driveway was quite long, probably 100 meters or so from the gate. The driveway goes down and it levels off in the main garage which is flat. The 180D however, being in the secondary garage, was still parked on a slope. Directly in front of it, down slope was a shack where our guard, driver and male helpers would sleep.<br />
<br />
When I was 4 or 5, I engaged in my usual habit of sitting in the drivers seat pretending to be driving. Being an observant little boy, I imitated the movements our driver when driving the car. Turning the wheel, using the turn signal, shifting gears and THEN releasing the handbrake.<br />
<br />
So the car immediately started to roll down towards the wooden wall of the shack. Luckily, either the guard or the driver happened to be there and started shouting, calling the others to help him. The picture that is burned in my mind forever, is that person standing in front of the car, pushing with all his might to prevent the car from moving further. In a minute or so, someone was able to open the car door and pull up the handbrake, before putting it back in gear. After this incident, I was still able to pretend-drive but the handbrake was pulled up very hard making it impossible for me to release it again.<br />
<br />
That is probably my most memorable moment in that car. It was even used to bring me to and from kinder school occasionally but it was reassigned to be used in the family property in Mindoro island, far away from Manila so I would only see the car once in a while when it was used by our property manager there. When I was in college we went on a short vacation to Mindoro and I was able to ride the 180D again. Then we left the ancestral home for our own home and the 180D was brought back to Manila to stay. To this day we still have it and I am planning to make an offer to buy it from the family. The reason for this is because not too long ago, I asked my Dad who suffers from Alzheimer's, what is the one car he would like to own again and he said the Mercedes 180D. Hopefully I can make it happen for him.<br />
<br />
Now about the 180D as a car, I remember the car as being quite comfortable and spacious. I don't think I ever got to drive it in public roads but I was able to take it up and down the driveway. I also remember the boot as very spacious and I saw a couple of old photos where we used the 180D going up to Baguio which was 250 to 350 kilometers from Manila (depending on which road you take going up) and was 5500 feet above sea level. No mean feat for a car with just 32kw or 42 hp!<br />
<br />
Here's a video of completely original 180D<br />
